Lips Surgery (Cheiloplasty)
Cheiloplasty or lip augmentation is the name given to any surgical procedure to repair the lips. It might be performed to reduce or increase its volume.
"Bardotization": high volume appearance
As a reference to the volumous lips of the actress Brigitte Bardot, this lip augmentation or Cheiloplasty procedure intends to increase the volume of the lips. The lips can be filled with muscle fibers, skin from the own patient or even temporary fillings such as hyaluronic acid.
Major loss at the lips
The lip augmentation or Cheiloplasty procedure intends to correct cracks on the lips, which might be congenital or traumatic. Surgery will be done through the muscle and skin transplantation to the lips. This lip augmentation or Cheiloplasty procedure requires 2 to 3 surgical procedures. The results look as natural as possible, almost reaching the natural color of the lips.
Perioral peeling
This treatment works on exfoliating the area around the lips. Peeling is performed in a mechanical way, with a diamond fraise. Exfoliation reorganizes the collagen, making skin look younger and fresher. Depending on the case, laser or chemical peel might be indicated.
If you are in great physical and emotional health, have reasonable expectations, elastic skin and no previous existing medical conditions, you may be a candidate for the lip augmentation or Cheiloplasty. Potential patients must have patience and understanding, as well as enough discipline to follow postoperative protocol to increase their chances of a positive outcome from the lip augmentation or Cheiloplasty.
If the above pertains to you and you wish to augment, alter, resize, reshape or lift your lips, you may be a good candidate for the lip augmentation or lip enhancement procedure. Only a qualified medical professional can determine this after speaking to you and going over your medical history, examining your lips and skin. You must realize that no one can perform miracles, but a highly skilled plastic surgeon or injectors can transform your nice lips into the perfect lip shape for you.
Some indications for the lip augmentation or lip enhancement procedure include small, deflated lips, asymmetry, reconstructive needs, drooping or sagging upper lip, lack of color, wrinkling from smoking and/or aging.
Since 2000, more products and techniques have been developed to make lip augmentation or lip enhancements more effective and patient friendly. The relative ease of many injections is due to surgeons using tiny 30 and 31 gauge (about as thick as a dozen human hairs) needles that are used to inject the very sensitive lips. Nonetheless, topical anesthesias are often used for the lip augmentation or lip enhancement procedures.
Fat transfer is another option as well. Surgeons harvest fat through liposuction or excision the patient's fat from places on the body where it can be spared and either injected or surgically placed into the lips. Surgical applications usually require general anesthesia.
